We just updated Virtual Server SP1 to R2. After the upgrade we couldn't start all the virtual machines anymore: "could not be restored because there is not enough physical memory or system resources available" But we have 9Gb int mem free, cpu usage is about 25% and enough storage Can anybody tell me the anwer?

Consider this: One Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Ed. license will give you a single physical host, and unlimited VM licenses as long as you only run 4 concurrently. You could have a stand-alone host running Virtual Server 2005 R2 or VMWare Server 1.1 (both free) and have two or three VMs running.

Are you looking at purely technical or business needs? You seem to be focusing on technical merits where Virtual Server may not be optimal. You may want to focus on cost, eg Virtual Infrastructure is over $5000/socket. Although it is difficult to argue cost against the free VMware Server.
